21 Ocean Murals for Austin Pediatric Surgery at Dell Children's

In 2025 I painted 21 custom murals for Austin Pediatric Surgery, on the 4th floor of the Dell Children's medical building in Austin's Mueller neighborhood. The goal was to bring life to a space that can feel stressful for kids and parents, and to make it interesting and calming at the same time.

Project at a Glance

Client: Austin Pediatric Surgery, Dell Children's, Austin, TX

Murals: 21

Spaces: Waiting area, hallways, patient rooms, and exam rooms

Year: 2025

Timeline: 2 months

Medium: Non-toxic indoor paint

The Challenge

This was a working medical office, so I scheduled painting around patients' appointments and the doctors' days. The subject matter needed care too. Every animal had to feel friendly, so I designed each one with a gentle, non-threatening expression. That matters in a room where a child might already be nervous.

The Design

Each room has its own theme: the Shark, Sting Ray, Sea Turtle, Clownfish, Seahorse, Crab, and Octopus Rooms. The themes also help staff direct patients ("head to the Sea Turtle Room"). I chose the colors to keep the space calm. Hallway murals of jellyfish and swirling water connect the rooms and lead families from the front desk to the exam rooms.

The Result

Staff say the murals get comments all the time, and patients keep telling them how much they love them.

"Becka did a great job on the murals in our medical office. We would highly recommend her work to others."

Ruth Carter, Office Manager, Austin Pediatric Surgery
